35mm Photography

There is a definite link between photography and design. I naturally try and find a composition through the lens in a similar way to creating a page composition. Photography has always been a passion of mine alongside design and I exercised this through analogue photography. Shooting with a manual SLR  increased my understanding of the photographic process because I have to manually set the ISO, aperture and focus.

I take a lot of inspiration from my surroundings and photography allows me to document this. Here is a selection from this year.

Yorkshire Dales:

Went walking in the Yorkshire Dales and took my camera with me. I knew the natural light would make it easier to shoot the dramatic views and geology as the black and white films compliments the raw, physical nature.

Scans:

Tones picked up by the black and white film compliment the rolling hills and foggy weather:

Captured the natural gradient of tones from the cloud cover:

Overexposing the image creates depth and texture:

Shots from the KAWS exhibition at YSP:

Really liked how the manmade forms were juxtaposed around the natural environment:

I find the contrast and tones that black and white photography creates aesthetically really appealing, especially when combined with typography. I would like to find a purpose for combining these photographs with typography in the dark room, as I don't want do it for the sake of it.

I would really like to involve this process in my practice to add visual support to the text. I need to find a project where I can take/use the relevant photographs and make the most out of the concept.

I am really keen to get back into the dark room to explore new ways of typographic manipulation.

Possible concepts:
  • New ways of typographic manipulation. Laser cut letterforms and use them to manipulate the photographs in the dark room. Placing the letters over the paper when it is being exposed will be a way of combining text and image. This process will allow me to explore and experiment with typography.
  • The dark room process can also be adapted to print onto materials such as wood and fabric.
