Netflix documentary series exploring the world of design.
Notes:
Scher balances commercial design with personal work - This is healthy for a designer
I intend to balance my time better so that I can self initiate projects away from the limitations of a brief. Printing is a passion of mine, however it isn't always an appropriate solution for briefs therefor I intend to experiment with materials and processes in my own time. I feel this will encourage more creativity.
I wasn't aware that Scher started her career creating album artwork. It seems working for the music industry creating album artwork is a good starting point for a designer as Michael C Place of Only began his career in the same way. Perhaps the creative freedom and subjectivity of album artwork allowed the designers to experiment and practice with a range of concepts and styles, developing transferrable skills. Both of these designers' work appeals to me as it is contemporary and experimental.
The difference between art and design? - 'Paintings are designed not to answer questions but to ask them.'
Scher makes an interesting point as she believes a company doesn't need a logo to recognise it, a visual language is just as good. Consistency in vision creates a transferrable concept.
Also watched the Photography episode with Plato.
There is a clear similarity between graphic design and photography as Platon states 'great design simplifies a complicated world', which was very much apparent within Modernist principles of design.
Found both episodes really inspiring as both designers fail to overcomplicate their practice which is refreshing to see.
