OUGD502 - Future Rising

Future Rising are a careers network that help graduates and creatives to start a career in the creative industries.

Recent graduates Charlotte and Barry work for a large advertising agency called Iris

They spoke about their experience from graduating from University and landing a job in the advertising world.

Advice I picked up:

BRAND YOURSELF:
Be yourself in order to stand out
Get social - Linked in and Twitter

Get to know the internet - What's trending
Get your work online - Accessible for everyone
Suggested Squarespace, Cargo, Format - DONT USE WIX
Don't be afraid to tackle big brands

Something positive that I took from the talk was the fact that the creative directors for agencies are more concerned with the idea rather than the artwork. If the idea is strong and supported by initial sketches and mockups, it can be sent through to the art department for them to make look professional.

PORTFOLIO

Less is more
Limited text - They don't like to read large blocks of text - Be able to write it in a Tweet - 144 characters
Predominantly visual

The talk was very much aimed at those wanting to go into advertising, however the advice on social media presence will prove useful:
  • Be personal
  • Post design you like/dont like
Relationship between copywriter and art director
Tends to cross over

Cam

2011 graduate from LCA currently works for BRASS

Creative copywrighter
Learnt the value of play
Take outside references and imbed it into my work
PURPOSE drives him
Sometimes you can think of your own ambitions rather than what the client wants.

This talk exposed me to advertising, as opposed to design, which made me aware of the ethical issues within advertising when comparing it to my practice. Although there is more money in advertising, I am not sure that I agree with all of what Charlotte and Barry were saying.
