OUGD502 - PRESENTATION 1st Draft

Assessment Criteria

  • Demonstrate an informed understanding of the professional context of their practice within the creative industries and cultural environment.
  • Identify and analyse the challenges and opportunities offered by future developments within individually appropriate areas of creative practice.
  • Develop a body of work in response to a defined brief that effectively demonstrates an awareness of their own practice in relation to others.
  • Employ a range of appropriate professional communication methods to record and present their own creative practice, concerns and ambitions.'
Guidelines:

10 mins
5-7 minute presentation
3-5 minutes for questions

Overview of journey onto level 5:
  • Physical and tangible outcomes
  • Combining analogue and digital - I believe they can compliment each other
  • Attracted to an experimental practice, exploring techniques and processes and other materials
  • Would like to explore this further, however I am concerned ambiguity and subjectivity is limiting in a commercial context. I need to make money at the end of the day so I need to identify a clientele/studio that is suited to my practice.
  • 'GET OVER YOURSELF' - I tend to think quite ambiguously which has its pros and cons. It's the way I think however I am trying to be more objective.
  • Responsive has been challenging as the standard of work has increased and the concept plays more of an important role for it to work in the real world. However it has encouraged me to present my work in a professional manner.
Engagement with the real world:
  • SJP letter and reply - Sparked by my interest in editorial design, I contact Brighton based SJP because I admire bespoke editorial design and tangibility.
  • Dafi Kuhne letter and reply - Inspired by Kuhne's methods of exploring and developing an unfinished medium and combining analogue and digital to see how traditional letterpress can be explored and pushed.
  • Extra Strong studio visit and 3 day placement - Learnt a lot from the experience of working in the real world. Small studio, met the creative team, live briefs and gained advice on my work. Highlighted my typesetting needs to be improved so showed me how to use baseline. Impressed with the work considering its first year - Expand
  • P98a, Berlin Studio Visit
  • Hannah Waldron - Illustration and textiles isn't particularly part of my practice, however I wanted to explore how other designers bring materials and processes to their work. Went to her talk and emailed her after seeking further advice and she offered a book recommendation.
  • Talk with Andy from Colours May Vary
  • Talk with Clare Cutts Wood - Spike Print Studio about her screen prints.

Techniques
  • Digital skills have improved - InDesign and After Effects
  • Dark room
  • Traditional print
  • Screen print
Theories

Quote from Dafi Kuhne - 'Bad design concepts don't get better if printed with complicated and expensive techniques. Technique in and of itself is not a design concept.'

Plans for the future
  • Contact with Nomad Studio
  • Contact Extra Strong because they were enthusiastic to have me back
  • Dafi Kuhne summer program invitation - Would be an amazing opportunity to broaden my practice and learn more about Kuhne's techniques and analog and digital processes through an intense 2 week program. HOWEVER due to lack of funds this seems unmanageable at this time. £1500, no accommodation, travel or food.
  • Contact CRACK magazine for a placement - Contemporary style and subjects spread over music, fashion and art through print media and online. I am interested in editorial design and I am aware of a lot of the articles from the magazine which shows a complimentary interest. Looked at the jobs available and in the description is says a knowledge and understanding of the topics covered is essential and an awareness of potential stories and articles to cover would be beneficial.
  • Spike Print Studio - Located in Bristol
Presentation Concept

Attending Studio Build's seminar, I was exposed to a professional and considered presentation. To begin, Michael Place flicked through images of his project outcomes, almost like a Gif to draw the audiences attention and introduce his style of work. This would be a good method for keeping the audiences attention on the screen rather than on me.

FIRST DRAFT

Introduction:

Took influence from Studio Build's presentation by showing short, snappy images of my work from this year. Cropping the images make the slide more engaging and intriguing. As I like to explore raw, physical design, this is my opportunity to showcase my achievements.

Exploring physical/tangible design processes
Trying to imbed them in my practice

Experimental Practice

Combining analog and digital
Clear preference for hands on processes
Resurgence in analog
HOWEVER, takes a lot of time management and thinking ahead which is hard due to the volume of work.

COP made me aware of subjective and objective design - Learning about Modernist design principles has made me a better designer:

SJP: Small Brighton based studio focusing on physical and tangible work
Editorial design is an interest of mine
Got in contact with Emily who kindly send me a publication of her favourite projects from last year.
Gave me confidence to contact more creatives.

Hannah Waldron

Went to her lecture at the university, it was primarily for printed textiles and illustration however I was attracted to the weaving process. Inspired by how her designs moved from one medium to another. Originally an illustration student, Waldron explained how her designs transfer into weaving as she naturally drew in grids. This sparked an interest in material processes.

Contacted Waldron via email asking further questions and advice

She recommended a publication to me and provided a quote from it. I intend to read this as it can inform my practice and can potentially be used in COP:

Berlin

Opportunity to print traditional letterpress in Eric Spiekermann's studio
Amazing experience
Surprised by how clean it was so enquired about how many briefs they have at the same time. The technician said that they currently have no briefs and they simple print a poster a month. £££

Dafi Kuhne - Huge inspiration to me. Inspired by Kuhne’s methods of exploring and developing an unfinished medium and combining analogue and digital to see how traditional letterpress can be explored and pushed. Contemporary practice using traditional techniques.

I want to contact this guy.
But how? Considering he is from Switzerland

Final letter and booklet:

Got a response!

Don't need your own press - Take advantage of the facilities out there!
Speak about how P98a was so clean and they only create 1 poster a month just to pay rent. - Dont waste the facilities.
Don't design retro design - Designing for a trend is dangerous as it can peak but then dramatically fall. Thats why Kuhne explores contemporary design.

Invitation to my summer program:

Costs a lot:

Took an influential quote from Kuhne which relates to my practice. It is a lesson I need to consider in order to become a better designer and not just rely on the fact it is printed.

Extra Strong - Visited the Bristol based studio to show them my work from first year and gain some advice.
Learnt a lot of industry standard considerations
Good working environment

The work was completely different to what I was used to however I got some work sent as proposals to the client.

I aim to design more objectively so that it is appropriate to work and function in a commercial context. I am learning to sacrifice aesthetic value and personal style for function.

Cop made me aware of aesthetes and pragmatists - I aim to be more pragmatic

Plans for the future:

Potential places to contact for placements based on my practice:
